We’re committed to achieving an AIDS-free generation by 2030—and we believe health workers are the key to making this vision a reality. That’s why we focus on health workers and the systems that support them as we tackle each hurdle that remains between us and the end of the epidemic.

Our key approaches:

Scaling up HIV prevention strategies, including provider-initiated testing and counseling, voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), index case testing, pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis, and gender equality in HIV services
Supporting comprehensive HIV/AIDS care through service integration; prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT); ART, including bringing ART to hard-to-reach and key populations (e.g., female sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, inmates); and addressing stigma and discrimination
Facilitating human resources for health (HRH) innovations, including helping to design national strategies to rapidly recruit and deploy health workers to deliver HIV/AIDS services, strengthening national policies and guidelines that support HIV service delivery, and supplying health sector leaders with critical health workforce data using our iHRIS software and other tools
Maximizing the performance of health workers, organizations, and systems for quality service delivery by applying our Optimizing Performance and Quality (OPQ) approach
Developing and adapting digital health solutions to enable informed health workforce decision-making, enhanced client support (e.g., for ART adherence and feedback on service quality), and easier access to learning resources for health workers
Strengthening the social service workforce to support resilient families and care for orphans and vulnerable children in the context of HIV and AIDS.

In Tanzania, partnered with local factory owners, boda-boda drivers’ organizations, and the entertainment industry to combat the spread of HIV.

Helped Uganda add over 7,200 new health workers to its health system by helping the health sector use powerful health workforce data to advocate for greater funding from the Uganda Parliament.

Provided HIV services to 4,072 female sex workers in South Sudan by reaching out to brothels and lodges, training peer educators, providing contraceptives, enrolling workers in the appropriate treatment, and more.

Provided HIV testing and counseling to over 1 million people in Tanzania.

Trained health workers in Kenya to screen for cervical cancer among women of reproductive age, particularly those who live with HIV.

Established 230 mothers’ support groups for HIV-positive women at facilities in Ethiopia offering PMTCT services—the groups have increased uptake of antiretroviral prophylaxis (98% among pregnant mothers and 96% among infants).

Enrolled over 36,600 adults and children Namibia in antiretroviral therapy, including over 10,600 HIV-positive pregnant women.

Helped recruit 128 new health workers to address HIV in Namibia’s rural northern regions.

Educated 275,000+ people in South Sudan about HIV prevention.

Helped almost 739,000 Zambians receive HTS and their test results including 70,000 members of key populations, with 87% of those testing HIV positive initiated on ART.

Implemented and adapted a health worker training guide for the provision of stigma-free HIV/AIDS services to key populations in 14 countries through LINKAGES and Health4All

Helped recruit 730 new health workers funded by PEPFAR for high-volume HIV/AIDS treatment sites in Uganda.

Through the establishment of two new cadres of health workers in Central America, retained more than 4,000 people at risk of dropping out of ART, and recovered 2,570 people who had dropped out of treatment.

Trained and deployed 27 adherence promoters to work across 30 HIV clinics in Central America

Provided HIV testing, counseling, and prevention services for over 400,000 people in Zambia via lay counselors; all clients that tested positive were referred for care and treatment.

Trained 300+ lay counselors in Zambia to advise clients living with HIV on adhering to their antiretroviral medication, avoiding transmission or re-infection with HIV or other sexually transmitted infections, and the proper use of condoms.

Utilized the OPQ approach in 100 hospitals, 37 HIV clinics, and 65 health centers to support training of over 10,000 health workers in HIV counseling and testing, stigma and discrimination prevention in Central America.

Scaled up and built demand for PMTCT services in Ethiopia, including supporting PMTCT-MNCH service integration in 1,025 health centers—about 1.4 million pregnant women have received HIV testing, and thousands of HIV-positive women have received treatment.

Collaborated with Ethiopia's Ministry of Health to develop guidelines such as the training package for basic emergency obstetric care, a roadmap for safe motherhood, and plans to scale up Option B+ and eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

Established 230 mothers’ support groups for HIV-positive women at facilities in Ethiopia offering PMTCT services—the groups have increased uptake of antiretroviral prophylaxis (98% among pregnant mothers and 96% among infants).

Partnered with the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University to pilot the Pratt Pouch in Zambia, a drug delivery system that enables women who deliver outside of health facilities to administer antiretroviral doses directly to their newborns.

Provided tuition fee loans to over 18,000 health professional students in Kenya, emphasizing cadres critical for HIV/AIDS services.

Utilized the OPQ approach in 100 hospitals, 37 HIV clinics, and 65 health centers to support training of over 10,000 health workers in HIV counseling and testing, stigma and discrimination prevention in Central America.
