April 5, 2010, Chapel Hill, NC—IntraHealth International, a 30-year-old North Carolina-based nonprofit focusing on the critical needs of health workers worldwide, recently elected Walter Davenport to its ten-member Board of Directors. Davenport is a certified public accountant who brings four decades of experience working with the nonprofit industry as an auditor and business consultant.
A North Carolina native, Davenport began his career in the Atlanta office of Arthur Anderson & Company. In 1974, he returned to North Carolina as one of the initial incorporators of Garrett and Davenport, P.C., CPAs, the state’s largest and oldest minority CPA firm, which later merged into Cherry, Bekaert and Holland, a regional accounting and consulting firm. Davenport headed up the firm’s Not-For-Profit Industry Group out of its Raleigh office, and is now a retired audit partner.
“Global health is as important to me, and to us, as the health care reform going on in our own country. To achieve, you have to be healthy; lack of adequate access to good health care affects every individual’s ability to achieve his or her goals and dreams,” Davenport said. “I believe in the work that IntraHealth is doing in global health. I look forward to bringing my financial experience and expertise to help the organization achieve its mission.”
Throughout his 40-year career, Davenport has served a variety of nonprofit groups, business and public commissions as an active volunteer and board member. Currently, Davenport serves on the boards of Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Way of the Greater Triangle, the BB&T Advisory Board, UNC’s Board of Governors, and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. He is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta.
“With his many years of experience and high profile in the area’s non-profit and business communities, Walter Davenport will be a significant asset to IntraHealth’s Board of Directors,” said Barry Eveland, who chairs IntraHealth’s Board.
