The Triangle Global Health Consortium has named Pape Gaye, president and CEO of IntraHealth International, its 2019 Triangle Global Health Champion. Each year, the consortium recognizes one local leader’s passion and dedication to global health. They chose Gaye as their 2019 champion because of his lifelong commitment to advancing the field.

Gaye is a native of Senegal. Over the past 30 years, he has advocated for health workers, strong health systems, and access to health care for all. Today he oversees work in more than 40 countries to strengthen their health workforces and health systems.

Under his leadership, IntraHealth has made human resources for health a crucial part of the worldwide conversation on global health. In the United States, his testimony on Capitol Hill during a 2014 Ebola-focused congressional hearing brought the role of frontline health workers to the fore. As a panelist during the White House Global Summit in July 2016, he urged the incoming US president to focus on international aid and human resources for health as powerful investments in our shared future.

"I am proud to be part of such a vibrant community that is making a real difference in global health and development,” Gaye says. “Our collective effort in the Triangle Global Health Consortium is leading to improvements in the lives of people around the globe and it is exciting to see it play such a catalytic role in these achievements."

The 2019 award celebration will be held Tuesday, May 7, at 6:30pm at Top of the Hill in Chapel Hill, NC.
