The Community Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (CPMTCT) project worked with the Government of Ethiopia to scale up, integrate, and improve the quality of PMTCT and maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services.

A primary project aim was to build public-sector capacity for PMTCT/MNCH service integration and management. The project also focused on increasing access to quality services and ensuring community follow-up of HIV-positive pregnant women, mothers, and HIV-exposed infants.

Selected Initiatives

• Supported the country’s plans to accelerate scale-up of PMTCT services

• Improved the capacity of community- and facility-based health workers to provide quality MNCH and PMTCT care through enhanced in-service training

• Improved coordination and referral networks between and among service providers at multiple levels (i.e., communities, health posts, health centers, and hospitals)

• Supported preservice training for community health and parasocial workers)

• Mobilized communities to encourage use of MNCH and PMTCT services
