Last night, IntraHealth hosted 30 activists at its Chapel Hill headquarters to discuss nine strategies for activism against gender violence. We organized this event in collaboration with the Triangle Global Health Consortium as a part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. During this campaign, we also launched a blog series  on gender violence, which includes this piece as well as blogs from my colleagues:

Thinking about how people can educate themselves and their communities about violence against women, I pulled together some resources and videos on stopping violence against women:

• From Rutgers Center for Women’s Global Leadership 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Resources—HIV/AIDS and Violence against Women | This webpage provides links to numerous resources on the intersection of violence against women and HIV/AIDS.

Videos (Some are graphic in nature)

• From Take Back The Tech, “What Can You Do to End Violence Against Women? Take Back The Tech!” This is a video on how technology, like the Internet and mobile phones, impacts violence against women. Take Back The Tech! is a collaborative campaign that promotes creative and strategic use of technology in the fight to end violence against women.
• From Say NO to Violence, “Breaking the Silence: Kenyatta National Hospital Addresses Gender-Based Violence.” This video presents the work that women at the Kenyatta National Hospital are doing to support victims of gender-based violence and break the silence about abuse.
• From Bell Bajao campaign, “Bus Driver.” This video (subtitled in English) is part of India’s Ring the Bell campaign. It shows a man derailing an incidence of violence by ringing his neighbor’s doorbell when the man hears his neighbor raising his voice at a woman inside. • From Say NO to Violence, “Surviving Domestic Violence: A Personal Story from European Parliament Member Eva-Britt Svensson.” Eva-Britt Svensson, a Swedish politician and a member of the European Parliament, recounts her experiences with domestic violence and how she left an abusive husband.
• From the Ministerio de Trabajo y Asuntos Sociales Instituto de la Mujer, “Violencia Domestica.”  This dialogue-free video shows how violence against women can be a hidden problem.
• From France’s Ministry of Justice, “Violence Doméstique.” This video contrasts euphemisms such as “love taps” and “marks of passion” with visible realities of violence.
