The Vistaar Project

The Vistaar Project is a six-year, $25 million initiative to assist the Government of India and state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand in taking knowledge to practice in order to improve maternal, newborn, and child health, and nutritional status. Working with the public sector and other partners to promote evidence-based practices going to scale and reaching the most vulnerable, the Vistaar Project takes its name from the Hindi word for “expansion.” The project’s objectives include 1) providing strategic technical assistance, 2) generating evidence about effective, efficient, and expandable interventions, and 3) advocating for evidence-based programming. In addition, the project supports health system and health workforce strengthening initiatives in both states as well as in the state of Bihar.

The Vistaar Project assists the state governments in:

  • Improving frontline provider performance, especially interpersonal communication and counseling in maternal and child health and nutrition: home visits by frontline providers have increased in program areas in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
  • Enhancing the quality of training and support for skilled birth attendants (in Jharkhand), including improved supportive supervision: the average number of institutional deliveries conducted by skilled birth attendants has increased.
  • Strengthening monthly frontline worker meetings, which include capacity-building sessions, use of data, and problem solving
  • Increasing the number and improving the quality of services offered at Village Health and Nutrition Days
  • Fostering a supportive environment for addressing adolescent health issues, with a focus on adolescent anemia and delaying age at marriage
  • Improving governments’ ability to plan, develop, and support the health workforce due to stronger human resources information systems in Bihar and Jharkhand
  • Increasing awareness of evidence-based nutrition interventions and approaches as a result of the Coalition for Sustainable Nutrition Security in India, which IntraHealth supported as the secretariat from 2008-2011. The Coalition fostered interagency collaboration and produced a key advocacy document, Sustainable Nutrition Security in India: A Leadership Agenda for Action, which was presented to the National Planning Commission to inform the next five-year development plan (2012-2017). IntraHealth also contributed to an important review: Global Lessons in Achieving Nutrition Security and Their Application to the Indian Context.
